Using Essential Oils

Return To List

Last Update: 28 Aug 05

There are many different ways you can make use of essential oils.

Massage:
A combination of oils blended with a carrier oil such as grapeseed or sweet almond.  A small amount is placed in a cupped hand and then spread over the skin. The essential oils penetrate the skin and are absorbed into the blood stream. Common uses:
  • Pre- sports rub
  • Post sports rub
  • Pain relief
  • Sensual massage
  • Foot massage
  • Skin care
  • Scalp care
Vapouriser: There are many different ways of vapourising oils, by use of an electrical diffuser, nebuliser, lamp rings or the more popular and cheaper, oil warmers.  Heat is used to release the fragrance which is then inhaled.  Tiny particles are carried via the olfactory nerves to the brain.

Common uses:
  • Room fragrancing
  • Concentration aid
  • Convalescence
  • Sleep aid
  • Respiratory aid
Compress:  A wad of absorbent material is soaked in essential oils and applied topically to the skin.. NOTE very few oils are suitable for this.  Using unsuitable essential oils directly on the skin is dangerous. If in doubt, blend with a carrier oil first.

Bathing: Essential oils are added to the bathwater, the heat from the water vapourises the oils which are then inhaled. Oils are not water soluble and will need a little help to be disbursed.  Adding them first to a tsp of milk will ensure that they are evenly distributed and no concentrated 'pools' of oil are left, which could be harmful.
