What Is A Salt Lamp?

Salt crystal Lamps are crafted from salt crystal rock,  formed by nature  hundreds of millions of years ago and mined 800 meters below the surface in the salt mines of Asia and Europe.

Chunks of salt  rocks are bought to the surface, hand selected by craftsmen and fashioned into all manner of shapes ready to take the electrical fittings that turn them into unique, beautiful lamps.

Each one is individual, it has it's own shape, size, colour and translucency.  The one thing they all have in common - is the beneficial effect they have on the air that we breathe!

How Do Salt Lamps Work?

An ion is a molecule that carries a charge - which can be either positive or negative. Negative ions carry a negative charge and are beneficial to our health.  They act as 'Air Energizers' or as they are sometimes called 'Vitamins of the Air'.

In nature negative ions are created by means of wind, sunlight, surf, waterfalls and rainstorms. Pollution, electrical appliances, TV's, computers and cigarette smoke all contribute towards stripping the molecules of their electrons and leave the air full of positively charged ions.

Scientific studies show that salt crystal lamps can increase the negative ion count by up to 300%!

Crystalline rock salt is a natural ioniser.  Rock salt crystals effectively improve air quality by naturally emitting negative ions.  The amount of negative ions is greatly increased as the rock salt is warmed - either by means of a candle (T.Light Holder) or by a filament bulb (Lamp).

What Are The Benefits of Salt lamps?

The most dangerous levels of harmful positive ions occur in the polluted large industrial or heavily populated places.  Exhaust fumes, factory smoke, cigarette smoke, dust and electromagnetic pollution all combine to create a harmful environment which gradually affects our lungs, can ruin our health and leave us feeling lethargic and sluggish.

In fresh country air there is approx 4000 negative ions per cubic centimetre, near a waterfall there can be up to 10,000 ions per cubic centimetre, but in major capital cities it can be as low as 100.

By using a Salt Lamp to naturally increase the amount of negative ions in the living environment, you can:

  • Help reduce the severity of asthma attacks

  • Ease respiratory problems
  • ease congested sinus's
  • Ease allergies
  • Reduce hay fever
  • Ease migraines
  • Ease stress
  • Lowers levels of air-borne bacteria

  • Increase lung capacity
  • Improve concentration
  • Boost the immune system
  • Increase alertness
  • Aid restful sleep
  • Improve serotonin levels in the bloodstream

  • Stabilize alpha rhythms

Where can I use a Salt Lamp?

Bedrooms
a very good place to aid restful sleep.  Especially good in a child's room where it will serve as a comforting night light whilst providing healthy, clean air and encouraging refreshing sleep.

Living Area
A lamp or two in the main resting area of a house will help to reduce the effects of stress, fatigue, artificial lights, pollutants, cigarette smoke and radiation from televisions. The warm colour of the illuminated lamp is comforting in it's own right and induces a feeling of wellbeing.

Offices
A lamp in your work area can improve concentration, combat fatigue, improve productivity and combat the effects of radiation emitted from office equipment - particularly computer monitors.

Areas of Convalescence
Breathing in high quality, clean healthy air is very beneficial during periods of convalescence.  Salt lamps have also been shown to significantly reduce the number of air borne bacteria, thus promoting and environment conducive to  speedy recovery.

Care of Salt Lamps

Salt has hygroscopic properties, which means it absorbs water from the surrounding atmosphere.  Therefore Salt Lamps should not be used in bathrooms, kitchens or other places where there is excessive moisture.

  • Keep in a dry environment at all times

  • Do not place outdoors

  • Keep the lamp turned on for long periods of time, not only to enjoy the benefits of the negative ions, but also to dry any surface moisture.

  • If the lamp is not to be used for long periods of time - cover with a polythene bag to prevent moisture absorption.

  • To remove dust, use a DAMP cloth.
